Technology
X-AMP 3
The first X-AMP was developed personally by Dieter Burmesterand was first used in the 870 converter-amplifier combination and the 877 preamplifier. Since then, knowledge gained from decades of experience in the field of analogue signal processing has resulted in its continuous development. The second generation of the X-AMP also bears Dieter Burmester’s signature and has been used in various Burmester products since the mid-2000s until today.
The underlying circuit concept of the new X-AMP generation preserves the performance-related basic features of the technology, however, it was carefully extended and refined with the newly gained knowledge. Therefore, the spirit of the original BurmesterX-AMP technology is preserved but the sound performance is further enhanced.
The Technology
The X-AMP 3 is a three stage, fully complementary signal amplifier that features outstanding audio characteristics thanks to targeted compensation techniques. The very high linearity, even without negative feedback, as well as the almost complete independence of all sound relevant characteristics from all environmental or operating conditions is important to emphasize.
All components used are within a very narrow tolerance range and are selected according to the highest standards, especially the transistors. In addition, the shielding aluminum cover protects the sensitive electronics from external interference. Thus, the fully analogue circuit is designed for long life.
Due to significantly increased circuit complexity, the integration density is higher than ever before for a Burmester home component, which is why automated manufacturing methods with significantly improved precision are used. Finally, each X AMP 3 is nevertheless carefully tested individually against tight fault tolerances.
The new Generation
The X-AMP 3 is a discrete operational amplifier designed specifically for use in future Burmester high end audio products. The discrete design allows to achieve the optimum pure sound at any point in the signal path.
The Burmester X-AMP 3 is used as output amplifier in combination with DACs, phono modules or volume controllers to transmit the music signal loss free to the power amplifier. For example, source devices or preamplifiers benefit from this carefully designed amplifier module with unique sound performance.
Beyond signal quality, temperature stability, noise performance and signal bandwidth of the new X-AMP 3 have also been further optimized compared to its two predecessors. The construction is discrete, i.e. made of single, carefully selected components a matter of course for Burmester.
The complexity of the Burmester X-AMP 3 is comparable to that of a mechanical clockwork and consists of approximately 100 components per module. With its significantly improved audio parameters, the X AMP 3 pushes the limits of what is technically possible, thus enabling a previously unattainable level of reproduction.
The Sound
Part of Burmester’s sound philosophy is to reproduce the work as the artist intended. That means, as uninfluenced, and therefore as unaltered, as possible. Technology is a means to an end.
The new X-AMP generation is an essential element of future Burmester products and enables a crystal clear and airy sound performance with unprecedented detail without being overtly cold or analytical. The pure Class A operation is the basic prerequisite for the warm, substantial sound with impressive high resolution spatiality. Thus, this Burmester core technology heralds a new world of sound with the potential to reveal previously unnoticed details.

The idea
of sustainability
The purchase of a Burmester product has always been a long-term investment in outstanding sound quality. For this reason, Burmester makes the technology of the future portfolio also available to the Reference Line 111 Musiccenterby a modification.
The reduction of the form factor compared to the previous versions is a necessary step in order to be able to use the X-AMP in future new equipment developments under more challenging space conditions. In order to ensure full compatibility with existing equipment, individual, virtually lossless adapter boards have been developed for use in existing equipment.
The modification is carried out exclusively in-house at Burmester in order to meet the company’s own quality standards. As part of the modification, a comprehensive final test takes place and the product receives a new warranty for the period of two years, regardless of when the product was purchased.
